What Is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)?

MGD occurs when the meibomian glands, tiny oil-producing glands located in the eyelids, become blocked or function poorly. These glands secrete meibum, an oil that helps maintain a healthy tear film on the eye’s surface.

When these glands don’t function properly, it can decrease the quality and quantity of meibum, causing the tear film to evaporate more quickly, resulting in dry eye.

Common Symptoms of MGD & Dry Eye

Meibomian gland dysfunction can lead to fluctuating or chronic dry eye symptoms, such as:

  • Red eyes
  • Burning or scratchy eyes
  • Foreign body sensation
  • Blurred vision
  • Grittiness or irritation

If left untreated, MGD can progress and cause further complications, affecting the eyelids and eye surface.

Meibography: A Game-Changer in Evaluating MGD

Meibography is an imaging technology that helps us visualize the meibomian glands. The noninvasive technology can produce images quickly and show measurable results. Using infrared technology, meibography captures details of the gland structure, helping our eye doctors evaluate the condition’s severity.

The sharp details allow us to personalize your treatment to your unique needs.

What Does MGD Look Like?

Healthy meibomian glands are like piano keys, relatively uniform and lined up side-by-side. Abnormal glands can appear congested, dilated, or atrophied—losing their uniform appearance. Therefore, we can easily show and explain the difference to patients using images of their eyes.

Patients can also see treatment progress, monitored through updated images.

Benefits of Meibography in MGD Treatment

By visualizing the meibomian glands, meibography allows us to identify early signs of inflammation or poor function. Early detection supports our ability to perform timely intervention and treatment.

Meibography helps differentiate MGD from other eye conditions with similar symptoms, supporting diagnostic accuracy. We can also monitor progress to track the effectiveness of treatments and make necessary adjustments.

The sharp image details can provide a clearer understanding of the severity and extent of the condition of your glands. As a result, we can customize your care for your unique eye health, symptoms, and lifestyle.
